The largest and most populous of the Canary Island is Tenerife. Volcanic nature for millions of years had been formed the island and created a magnificent colorful and diverse nature that encompasses all of dense forests and exotic plants to deserts, mountains, volcanoes, fertile valleys and amazing beaches. Teide volcano located in the center of the island, the third largest volcano in the world, is National Park protected by UNESCO, and a mountain range Macizo de Anaga UNESCO has declared as Biosphere Reserve.
The island of Tenerife has about 890 000 inhabitants, making it the most populous Spanish island. The main economic activities are tourism, agriculture and trade. Tenerife is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, with over 11 million tourists a year. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital, located in the northeast of the island. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a modern cosmopolitan city with many cultural monuments and tourist attractions, and is particularly famous for its carnival. La Laguna is the third largest city of Tenerife, is on UNESCO's World Heritage List, and is regarded as cultural and historical center of the island.
Tenerife boasts a large number of beaches, from the soft and sunny beaches of white and golden sand, volcanic beaches with black sand and small beaches formed between the high rocks. The most famous and beautiful beaches on Tenerife are Las Teresitas, Playa del Duque, Playa de la Tejita, Playa de Los Gigantes and Los de Christianos. Tenerife has two international airports, two major commercial and passenger ports and a well-developed road infrastructure.
